Main Street Museum
Train Depot
Before the development of the steam locomotive, very few things were commercialized. Covered wagons traveled an average of fifteen miles per day, which limited the distance one could go. By 1876 railways expanded and the completion of the Transcontinental Express, made it possible that passengers could effectively travel from New York City to Francisco in as little as 83 hours. Travel by train became the preference of transportation for both the wealthy and working class.
Guests visiting the Train Depot at Main Street Museum will be greeted with a one-of-a-kind mural, depicting the early history of the Rock Island Railway, which traveled from Rock Island, Illinois through Missouri to Kansas City.
